5. Always tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to arrive home.
6. Always wear reflective gear when running after dark.
7. Run short loops.
8. Be careful rounding corners.
9. Carry your cell phone, identification and some cash with you for an emergency.
So some of these might seem like common sense? But really — I learned to expose as little skin as possible the hard way. As long as your fabric is wicking, as you warm up you tend to feel more comfortable. I can’t tell you how much I love my head wrap/warmer. It makes all the difference as mornings get colder.
Also running shorter loops is highly underrated. I am lucky to have a park less than 2 blocks away that has a nice, 1.6 mile loop. On super cold mornings it makes the run 1) manageable and 2) easy to return home from. It’s not like I’m 5 miles from home and like “shit, now if I don’t turn around I’m stranded.” You know?
Any other tips?? How cold is too cold for you?? My break off point is 25 degrees. I’d love to hear more about how you train without buying a gym membership — message us or reply and give some tips!
