Denver, Colorado: Why You Should Run Outdoors This... →
neighborhoodr-denver: If you have a regular running practice, whether it’s formalized with app-tracking software, or a more casual commitment to run four days a week, you might have taken it inside in recent weeks, especially if you live in the chillier part of the Northern Hemisphere. It’s been cold outside,… We are lucky in Denver, it was mid-50s and sunny today. There was...

I have to say that now that mornings are cooler, it might be an incredible inconvenience to get up 20 minutes earlier but the crisp air and the changing leaves have really improved my mood and helped my runs. Do you guys change your routine with the seasons?

I actually made myself register for a race! So that means I will start running a lot again, and maybe posting on here about training! I realized I am terrible about motivating myself to run when not training for a specific purpose. I enjoy running a lot, that is no secret, yet when I come home from work I find it impossible to find the energy to go running. In the summer I can grab a quick run in...

Yesterday's 10K Playlist
The 10K yesterday went pretty well - I did it in 1:02, which is 10:01 minute miles. I probably could have gone out a little faster but I was worried about losing steam, so for the first 5 miles I was doing 10:15-10:20 minute miles. But then the last mile or so I sprinted and made up some time. Anyway. This was the playlist I listened to while I ran, on shuffle (obviously not every song came on...

Tomorrow is the 10K Scotland Run in Central Park, which – if you’ve been following along from the beginning – you might recall was the race that was my goal race last year. When I started running last February, the thought of running more than one mile seemed insane to me. But then I ran two miles, then three, and then five, and then last April I did the 10K, which is 6.1 miles. It felt like...

On hitting a wall
Guys, I’m getting very tired. I’ve been running regularly for the past year and a half, and I’ve been training for this half marathon (running 6 days a week instead of 4, with cross training and strength training and long runs one day per week) since January. I’m now to the point where I just don’t know how to increase my energy level. I mean, I’ve been through...

On the other coast
I woke up and the sun was shining over LA so I ran 7 miles along the Pacific Ocean. It was windy and sometimes the paved path was overrun by the beach and I was running on sand instead of concrete. That was a little bit different than running across Brooklyn.

I ran the Al Gordon Classic 4-mile race in Prospect Park this morning and I totally beat my goal of running under-10-minute miles: I ran it in 38:45, which is 9:42-minute miles! I am kinda pretty psyched. Next I’m doing the Scotland 10K in Central Park in April. If I can stay under 10 minutes/mile for the longer run I’ll be even more psyched.

Good morning run for those of you who live in Ft. Greene: your house —> Vanderbilt —> Grand Army Plaza —> Eastern Parkway —> Washington Ave. —> your house. It’s like 3-3.5 miles depending on where you live and of course you can add or subtract mileage as you see fit. I could see a Sunday long run being this plus a lap around Prospect Park. ...

The nice weather in New York yesterday and over the weekend got me excited and caused me to run farther and harder than I have been lately. It made me really happy during the runs, but my legs are less than happy now. I really actually enjoy running in the cold, but the lack of daylight hours makes it so difficult to run in the winter. Is it Spring yet?

stuartinwashington asked: I live in a city and like to run, but what I find MOST INCREDIBLY IRRITATING about running in an urban environment is having to wait for stoplights to change to go from one street to the next. Do you have any tips for how to minimize this annoyance?

Due to a stress fracture from last summer/fall, and then too much work for exercise (or so I reasoned), I hadn’t been for a run for at least four months until today. I was worried that this one would be not fun and even considered the possibility of my running hobby being a thing of the past. But I set out on one of my favorite loops and wow, it was great. I like this one because I get to...

Running Around Part 2
I made another running mix based on a few more of the songs I’ve been listening to while I run lately (and a few I meant to put on the original; there are also a few by artists whose songs are on the other mix, but who just make good songs to run to). I suggest setting your iPod to shuffle; the tracks are just in alphabetical order by title. (Also, thanks to Sarah for the mix she posted the...

On Running Outside in Winter
Put on my running tights, Nike dri-fit sweatshirt with a hood, a vest and gloves and headed out for a run this afternoon, and thanks, I think, in part to my new running mix — to which I’ve added a bunch of songs! Running Around Pt. 2 coming soon — I had a really great 4.5 mile run from my apartment, through the projects, into Dumbo, along the waterfront, into Cobble Hill and ending at Trader...

Active.com: 5 Tips for a better treadmill workout →
I live in Denver and I work an 8:30-5:30, so in the wintertime it’s either too cold or too dark for me to do my usual run in the park. Unfortunately I CANNOT stand the treadmill. It’s a necessary evil — something I hate to rely on for training since it’s a snooze fest and a half. But today I got this in my email, and some of these are really important (the stuff about gear...

Swimming This Town
So you may have noticed that this Tumblr has been pretty quiet as of late. I can’t speak for anyone else, but the reason I haven’t been writing on it is because a couple months ago I found out I had a stress fracture in my right leg and I have been forbidden to run—or bike or basically do anything that could potentially strain the leg—since the end of September. It’s...

Treadmill only, for now, because I would be embarrassed to run in public in...

Pre-run Stretching? Meh, I'll warm up on the run. →
(via idontgetrunnershigh) Not very surprising results. Continuing to do what you usually do is best for you. If you stretch before running you risk injury if you stop. If you are fine not stretching then continue to not stretch before you run.

I have officially registered for the Hartford Marathon. Not sure why I kept forgetting to sit down and actually do that, but it is done now. Course has also changed this year to put the hills all in the first 5 miles, instead of having some in the last 5, awesome. Last weekend I was up in CT and run 8 miles on Saturday and 15 on Sunday. As much as I love running in the city it was enjoyable to...

I took a few weeks off from doing much running because my illiotibial bands were really bothering me. Then I started running indoors, back on the treadmill, and that seemed to be much better than running on pavement, and I also made sure to stretch more, and then this week I started running along the dirt path in Fort Greene Park. It’s great except for the kid I saw masturbating behind a...

Uh oh.
Last Saturday, I was floating around my parent’s pool reading a book, enjoying the long weekend. My mom says to me “Hey are you doing the Hartford Marathon this year? I just started my more serious training for the half, the race is in 14 weeks.” Oh no. I thought I still had plenty of time before I needed to start being more serious about a training program. October is a lot...

Running This Town: Astoria Branch
I moved to Astoria on Saturday. I got a dog on Sunday. And today, I ran for the first time in New York City. It was interesting. Is That A Dead Baby? I’ve never run in a city before. I mean, for the most part, I was a treadmill runner for my first two years (post-college). I ran a little cross country in high school and I had to run for crew/losing, I guess, beer weight in college.1...

First half-marathon race in the books, pretty happy with 7:21 average pace. Over 7000 finishers meant a pretty packed start in Prospect Park. Despite NYRR doing a great job separating the start corrals by pace, including color coding bib numbers, plenty of people started closer to the front than they should have been. At mile 1, an older woman who was cutting back into the still packed crowd after...

Brooklyn Half-Marathon Weekend
Check it out everyone, even if you are not participating in the race all kinds of businesses around Coney Island and Park Slope are having deals this weekend. Most involve a coupon from a book given out at the finish, but some are online coupon codes (like discount game tickets for the Brooklyn Cyclones! Woo minor league baseball games, hooray summer!).

runningthistown: I’m doing a marathon in exactly one month.  It’s my first time, and I keep hearing about hitting “The Wall” after Mile 20.  Any suggestions on how to avoid this. During my first marathon I never really hit “the wall” because I had injured my achilles the week before...

Got back into it tonight after the 5 Borough Bike Tour on Sunday and assorted other busy-ness (and business); the combination has meant I haven’t been running quite as much as I’ve been wanting to.
